Weekly Garbage Pickup
Weekly garbage pickup is an issue that people seem deeply divided over. While door knocking I found people mainly fell into two groups. Either you never forgave the city for changing or you see no reason to go back as it works fine for you. The third group just go with the flow. I support weekly pickup across the city because it is what a lot of people want. Let me point out a few facts for your consideration.
- Weekly garbage pick-up doesn’t mean twice the garbage. It means half the garbage twice as fast. Sure a few people will abuse it but overall the amount should net out the same. Think about it!
- If you do not have garbage, or wish to put yours out every second or third or even fourth week. You have that option too. No garbage put out means no pickup meaning less additional cost. I frequently was able to achieve every fourth week several times last winter.
- Public education to encourage better recycling and reductions in packaging waste should be expanded and incorporate the ICI sector.
- I am not, nor did I accept the invitation to join the group of candidates who have banded together over this issue.
I acknowledge that there will be an additional cost for this service. What I propose to do is to transfer the projected additional cost from the funds used for professional services/consulting every quarter and to track budget vs actual spending via my proposed project control office which would report directly to council members.
